When Adrian and Shannon Rodriguez bought Lower Greenville’s Nuevo Leon in October, it wasn’t as if they were coming to the business blind. After all, Adrian had worked at the restaurant since 1997, spending much of that time as its manager. Because of this, they decided not to make changes, keeping the same menu, same staff, same ambience. After all, Shannon says, the premise works. “It’s real Mexican food,” she says. “We call it Mex-Mex instead of Tex-Mex. You can get a quesadilla if you want, but the other things on the menu – they’re more authentic, with interesting sauces and chiles.” Things such as Camarones Luis, which is shrimp, mushroom, poblano peppers and onion sauteed in a roasted garlic oil, served with a light cream sauce and topped with melted cheese. Another menu favorite: the Taco Macho – a huge flour tortilla with cheese, avocado and a choice of carne al pastor, carnitas or fajita meat, served with achiote sauce. Sound spicy? Not to worry. You can cool your taste buds down with Nuevo Leon’s well-stocked bar, where daily happy hours clock in from 3-7 p.m. Also of note: Tuesdays, $1 frozen margaritas and $3 strawberry margs are served all day, and Fridays, frozen margs go for $1.99 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Here’s to that.
