Most vegetarians already have discovered the meatless buffet tucked inside East Dallas’ Hare Krishna temple, but unacquainted carnivores are just as apt to enjoy its offerings. The international fare, heavily dominated by Indian dishes, changes daily but includes a few staples such as dal, an Indian bean soup akin to lentil, and sabji, curry made with fresh, seasonal vegetables. Lunch costs $7 or less, including dessert, and the best part is enjoying it in the serene courtyard under the canopy of a blooming holly tree. The food is made as an offering to the temple’s deity, Kalachandji, and the remnants are his prasadam, or gift of mercy, which is then served to guests. “We choose the best ingredients – we don’t use any cans, only fresh produce, and only olive, canola and corn oil,” says manager Danny Thomas. “But the most important ingredient that goes into cooking it is the love.”
