The comments are still coming in on our website stories about Northlake Elementary and a new movement called “Let’s Back Northlake,” organized by three neighborhood moms. Some of you are furious with the way we’ve covered this story. Some of you think we should continue this line of reporting. Many of you have weighed in with observations, opinions and personal experiences that have added to the discussion.

Wherever readers stand, there’s no doubt that this story resonates with a lot of Lake Highlanders, and that the issues surrounding a gradual exodus of homeowner families from a neighborhood elementary school are complex.

For today’s podcast, we sat down to talk with two of the three Let’s Back Northlake ambassadors, which is what the organizers are calling themselves. We asked them a lot of questions, including: Before this movement, where did you plan to send your kids to school? What problems with Northlake are keeping families who own homes from sending their children there? What needs to change about the school?

You’ll have to listen to the podcast to learn their answers, but a couple things to note: In answer to the question of why so many people are transferring to other RISD schools, which was the subject of our initial story, the ambassadors told us they believe there isn’t a good reason — that homeowners simply stopped sending their kids to Northlake years ago, and the reason it has stayed that way is because people tend to be followers rather than blazing a trail.

So will these trailblazers be sending their children to Northlake, even if they’re the only three homeowner families? They don’t believe that will be the case. But if it is, then yes, the women say — they’re all in.
