Darren Schultz is a proud Longhorn. His roommate is an old friend from high school — and he’s an Aggie. You can imagine the good-natured ribbing that goes back and forth between the two. And for Aggies, the class ring is a prized possession.

Unfortunately, a recent break-in resulted in Schultz’s friend losing his cherished ring to a burglar.

“He wears it all the time,” Schultz says. “He just didn’t that day. He left it on his dresser.”

The burglar entered the home the hard way, smashing through the front door and leaving pieces of splintered wood on the floor. And the ring wasn’t all this thief made off with — the haul included two TVs, two watches, and a pistol and ammunition.

Dallas Police Sgt. Keitric Jones of the Northeast Patrol Division says that securing a door with two or more deadbolts often helps prevent door break-ins, but the strength of the doorframe also must be considered.

For personal property, Jones recommends keeping records of valuables, including the serial number, make and model, to help police. He offers some simple advice on keeping these types of records.

“Maintaining records of this is as easy as taking pictures of the item or maintaining an excel spreadsheet and emailing it to yourself so if something happens to your computer, you will still have access to it,” Jones says.
