Registration for the Dec. 4, 2011 MetroPCS White Rock Marathon opens June 1, which also happens to be National Running Day. Yes, there is such a thing. This year, expect to see even more people racing through the ‘hood.

We shared a couple weeks ago about ways to prepare for a fall marathon or some other distance running event. And don’t forget that the White Rock Marathon is also a growing fundraising vehicle for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for children.

“Last year, with the help of our board members, volunteers, and through the generosity of our corporate sponsors, we put on one of the best races to date and were able to donate a record $560,000 to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children,” said Phil Baker, chairman of the Dallas White Rock Marathon (DWRM) board of directors. “This year, we’re excited to announce that we’ve set a $1 million donation goal to support the amazing work of the hospital.”

The race has sold out the last four years and organizers expect it to sell out faster than ever this year, even with an increased 25,000 available spots, so don’t hesitate to register at runtherock.com asap. You’ll also get a discount for registering early.

The half marathon (the most popular event) has 13,000 openings. The full marathon (26.2 miles) has 6,000 openings and the relay event is limited to 6,000 participants.

The race will, for the second year, begin and end at Fair Park. Organizers say they listened to feedback and hope to improve on a successful 2010 event.

“We’re going to have a faster start, better parking options at the Expo and an improved bag drop,” said Marcus Grunewald, race director for the DWRM. “We listened to feedback from last year’s participants and have worked to improve the race experience – this has always been a race for runners, by runners.”
