The Lake Highlands High School Bell Boys for the 2011-12 school year have been chosen, and they are: Hayden Bower, Ryan Mellinger, Mitch Winkler and Chase Faris. They were selected by a student body vote after a week of campaigning.
LHHS ranks as the top public school in Dallas other than DISD magnets and Highland Park, according to a newly updated study by Children at Risk. The Houston-based nonprofit group analyzes 5,800 public schools based on 14 criteria, including completion of Advanced Placement courses, SAT scores and dropout rates. Academic results are adjusted for the percentage of economically disadvantaged students who make up 42.7 percent of LHHS.
Emily Dawson and Roman Milan of LHHS were named National Merit finalists based on their exceptionally high PSAT scores. Other students recognized for high scores include: Alec Duray, Emily Hillman, Vince Karnes, Katie North, Hana Ovcina, Sarah Pickett, Libby Seeley, Sara Tuccio and Alex Ziehm.
Jim Morrison will retire this month following 32 years as a Richardson ISD educator, coach, volunteer and Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader for Lake Highlands Junior High and JJ Pearce High School. He took the Pearce tennis team to the state championships in each of his five years as coach. He has directed the Dayspring camp at Park Cities Baptist Church for 25 years. Both of his children went through Richardson schools and his wife Danette is a Science Curriculum and Instruction Specialist for Richardson ISD.

Alan Walne, a Lake Highlands businessman, was elected chairman of the board of directors and chairman of the executive committee of the State Fair of Texas. Walne is chairman of Herb’s Paint & Body and a former District 10 city councilman. His wife, Joan, chairs the Dallas Park Board. The State Fair of Texas is Sept. 30-Oct. 23 with the theme, “125 Years: A Timeless Tradition”.
Volunteer
Vickery Meadow Learning Center needs volunteers June 6-30 for its North Dallas campus, 6329 Ridgecrest. Opportunities include: adult classroom teacher, activity club teacher and preschool assistant.
