Full disclosure: Central Market (upper Greenville Ave.) brought us Advocate editors free food last week. It was a large platter of the freshly launched moister, healthier, from-scratch muffins made in the the CM bakery, and they truly were incredible. The muffins come in these inventive flavors such as white chocolate apricot, pear ginger and the one that blew my mind, balsamic-soaked strawberries with chevre (a soft cheese from goat’s milk), which was more like a gourmet meal in muffin form.

The line features more traditional offerings such as blueberry and banana nut granola, but even these are far from ordinary — gigantic blueberry chunks, bananas bursting from the muffin middle. The secret, according to the bakery development manager Edouard Damez is the traditional buttermilk batter and CM’s well-trained bakers.

And you know what? These muffins aren’t terrifically expensive. A four-pack is $5.99 (these are not four little muffins — they are gigantic) or $1.99 per. Bring a box to a shower or brunch and you’ll be as popular as the person who spikes the punch.
