LH resident Neil Tomba is an outdoorsy guy. Sure, most people know him as Senior Pastor Tomba, spiritual leader of Northwest Bible Church, but he’s often seen running or cycling around White Rock Lake.

Last year Neil created the Tomba Trot, a Thanksgiving Day outing for friends and family to walk, jog or cycle and enjoy God’s beautiful creation. This year’s event is picking up steam, with Facebook and other social networks helping to spread the word.

It’s still just a low-key, fun alternative to eating and watching TV all day, Neil’s wife Vela told me, nothing like the big YMCA Turkey Trot held in downtown Dallas. Participants don’t need to register, just show up at the Cyclists’ Lot on West Lawther Drive before the 9 am start time. There’s no fee to participate, but you can bring a new or gently-used sleeping bag or blanket wrapped in plastic to be donated to the homeless if you’d like. Those will be given to Wayne Walker who leads “Our Calling,” a local homeless ministry. If you’ll be away for the holiday but you’d like to help, donations to Our Calling are accepted here.
