LHHS Wildcats look to avenge loss from last year

Last year Desmond Roland rushed for 100 yards and DeVonte Sunwegnhan had one catch for a 38-yard touchdown against Mesquite Horn. However, Horn quarterback Emory Miller completed 86-percent of his passes for 364 yards and five touchdowns.

The Wildcats ended the night with a 36-14 loss to the Jaguars.

“I’d like to think this game is a little more special to all of us,” Scott Smith, Lake Highlands head coach said. “They kind of stung us last year. I think we’re going into this one with a bit of a chip on our shoulder.”

Smith warns that nobody should be fooled by the Jaguars 13-0 loss to Coppell in Zero Week.

“Coppell is a really good football team they played,” Smith said. “They are stocked with talent. Horn had some things they could take away from that loss.”

Horn quarterback Collin Strahan passed for 81 yards and led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 85 yards. Senior Jakeem Grant had two rushes for 73 yards and finished the night with five catches for 55 yards.

Coppell was able to post solid numbers rushing as Cam McDaniel ran 44 times for 218 yards.

Last week Roland and Sunwenghan combined for 310 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. So expect another helping of the power duo.

“We would love to be more balanced,” Smith said. “But at the same time, Desmond and Devonte know every week they are going to get the ball. And I think they thrive on that.”

Smith said if the offensive line continues to progress and sophomore quarterback Michael Ketchmark builds on his success from last week, the offense should be able to put itself in great position for redemption.

“We will always go the way our offensive line goes,” Smith said. “That’s the way it’s always been and always will be. But I think they are up for the challenge. I think if our offensive line plays the way they can and defense plays the way we know they can and we have a chance in the fourth quarter. I like our chances. From what I’ve seen of these kids, if we have a chance to win it in the fourth quarter, they know how to respond.”
