A burglary of a motor vehicle investigation Monday at about 6:15 p.m. led to a shooting followed by a messy crash at the Walnut and Audelia intersection in northern Lake Highlands.

Dallas Police Officers were investigating the burglary at 13015 Audelia Road when a witness identified a passing green pick-up truck as the burglary suspect, police say. The police yelled at the man to stop but he attempted to flee. An officer confronted the man, shots were fired and the man was apparently hit. The injured suspect fled, and a few minutes later he crashed through a bus stop on Audelia, veered into oncoming traffic and hit a tree. No pedestrians were injured.

A man at the scene said the driver of the green truck looked like he was “dead behind the wheel”.

“I heard a gunshot, and a few seconds later saw the truck all over the road; the guy was slumped over the wheel,” the witness said.

The suspect/driver was transported to Medical City in critical condition and the police officer who shot him sustained minor cuts and was treated at the scene.

Police shut down all lanes of traffic in the 9800 block of Walnut Street during the investigation.

The truck driven by an injured burglary suspect smashed through a bus stop before swerving into a tree on the opposite side of the road.

Police talk to witnesses at the crash scene.

A man who was riding his bicycle along Audelia heard the gunshot and witnessed the crash.
