Last weekend, the LHHS Winter Guard placed first at competition. Tonight, their performance won’t be judged and no winner will be crowned, but it will be just as competitive, as Lake Highlands students seek to show well among their RISD peers from Berkner, Pearce and Richardson High.

“Winter Guard is one of the secret successes of the LHHS band program,” said band dad Mark Wingfield, who recently served as president of the Lake Highlands Area Band Club. “For the past two years, the LHHS Winter Guard has been rising to the top in competition, but few people have seen them because their performances are not done at football games or other large venues. Winter Guard is the indoor version of Color Guard and includes dance and flag routines synchronized to music.”

“These young artists had an amazing performance,” agreed Color Guard instructor Danny Martinez, discussing their latest victory. “They showed true poise in their new class. It was a tight competition, and we placed first by two-tenths of a point. In true Lake Highlands manner, they cheered for their competitors and showed support to the other performing groups.” The RISD Showcase for Winter Guard begins at 7 pm at Richardson High School’s main gym tonight. Admission is free.
