Stop in to Highlands Nails for some post-holiday pampering. The nail salon, owned by Kevin and Kelly Kieu, has been in the Highlands Plaza shopping center (9661 Audelia) for more than 15 years. However, the Kieus recently moved next door into a newly renovated space to make some major upgrades, accommodate more customers comfortably, and expand their suite of services, which now include facials and massages in addition to manis, pedis and waxing. The updated salon sports some fab new features, including plush leather spa chairs and flat screen TVs. Plus, they have masseurs who are available by appointment. To ring in the new year and celebrate their grand re-opening, the Kieu’s are offering their customers 20 percent off all services through the end of January. Call 214.503.0464 for an appointment, or walk-ins are welcome.

Scott McPherson, owner of Renaissance Remodeling, has made it onto the “emergency contact list” for several of my friends. He’s the guy they’re going to when they need to get things done. McPherson’s wife, Tara (Delutis), was raised in Lake Highlands and is a LHHS class of ’80 graduate. Although they live just up the road in Richardson, their clients are primarily in neighborhood. Whether it’s residential upgrades, renovations or just general repairs, McPherson can make some serious progress on your list of honey-do’s. He can be reached at 972.768.6966 or info@renremod.com.

If you’ve got kids, then at the end of each season you’ve also got hand-me-downs. This year, do yourself a favor — don’t pack and stack, sort through the clothes and bring the “gently used” pile up to Sister’s Closet to make back some of your hard earned money. Located at 10240 E. Northwest Highway (next to the Cake Ball Company), the children’s consignment store opened in October and is owned by local residents and sisters, Robyn Sanford and Lori Franklin. Buying thrift is not only a great way to go green, but it just makes sense with kids — especially if yours are like mine, and grow at warp speed.

Do you find that your days and weekends get eaten up by chores and personal errands? Lake Highlands resident Margaret Farris started her biz, Time On Your Hands, about 10 years ago to help busy folks take care of the day-to-day minutia that seem to take over. Some of the personal services Farris offers include organization, household management, elder assistance, personal shopping and administrative support. Rates are hourly or project-based, so give her a shout to see if she’s got time to free up yours. Visit timeonyourhands.net or call 214.503.9154.

Last year, Lake Highlands resident Shannon Carlton started making and gifting diaper cakes for her friends who were expecting. The requests and referrals started rolling in, and in a matter of a few short months, The Zero Calorie Bakery was born. For those of you aren’t familiar with “diaper cakes” and started salivating at the mention of bakery, Carlton’s cakes don’t involve sugar, flour, baking powder, or any standard ingredients. Instead, think diapers, burp cloths, onesies and the like (thus, they’re zero calories). Carlton’s product line has expanded to include custom gift cakes and accessories for all occasions including wedding showers, birthdays, major holidays, football parties … You name it, and Carlton can fashion some sort of gift cake for it.
