Parents at Tuesday night’s LHHS PTA board meeting expressed surprise at the unexpected departure of RISD Superintendent David Simmons but had praise for gains made by the district under his leadership. Many were curious about the change three weeks before the start of school and shared frustration at the distraction and expense of a national search for a replacement, but none lingered on the negative. The mood was upbeat in anticipation of building on the academic achievements of the school and the district. “We are confident in the leadership at our school and at the district level,” said PTA president Donna Kent, mom of a rising junior. “I think it is important to keep our eye on the main goal, which is educating our students.”

As committee chairmen gave their reports on plans for teacher appreciation, schedule pickup, used book fairs, and adopting needy families, the focus quickly shifted to moving forward. “While I am saddened to see Dr. Simmons go,” said junior mom Beth Hanks, “he is leaving a ship that was in very good shape before he came and has improved under his leadership. I am especially thrilled to hear about the long range plans (Principal) Walter Kelly has for our school. The district certainly chose the right man to succeed our beloved Dr. Iden.”

Fran Phillips is new to Lake Highlands High, since her oldest daughter, Sarah, will be entering tenth grade. “The first PTA meeting was like LH 101, I learned a lot. In fact, I typed up my notes and sent them to a few friends to help them learn the ropes. The veteran moms were very helpful in explaining how things work.” Fran has experience working with RISD leadership since she previously served as PTA president at Merriman Park and Forest Meadow Junior High. “I have faith in the professionalism of the board and their decisions,” she added. “Patti Kieker will do a fantastic job (as interim leader), and even if the TEA appeal doesn’t change LHHS from Acceptable to Recognized, I consider that a technicality. Lake Highlands is a great school with a strong reputation.”
