Yesterday was the first day of school for students all over Lake Highlands, and – thanks to weeks of preparation – it went well. “It was great to see the kids back,” LHHS principal Walter Kelly told me. “It made all our summer work worthwhile.”

Lake Highlands High School welcomed new sophomores to the building and prepared to host the many freshmen who will walk across the parking lot from the Freshman Center for occasional classes offered only at the high school. “The teachers made a special push to greet students at the door, shaking their hands and learning their names,” Mr. Kelly noted. “They set a great example. I especially want to thank our PTA for help with new student registration and schedule pick up. They kept people flowing and alleviated our workload.”

For returning juniors and seniors, it was Old Home Week, seeing former teachers and greeting old friends. “It was interesting to see the shift in the cafeteria with the old seniors gone and the others finding their place,” Mr. Kelly noted.

Of course, no first day is without its share of excitement. “Other than the maintenance crew accidentally setting off the fire alarm,” he added, “it was clear sailing.”
