March is the month that scholarship applications are due for college-bound seniors. The good news: hard-working Lake Highlands individuals and organizations provide a multitude of opportunities to help these kids pay for college. The bad news: it can become a full-time job researching all the various funds and forms and meeting the various deadlines for submission.
Here’s an up-to-date listing by the Lake Highlands High School counselors of scholarships available, with the requirements needed and the amounts to be given. You’ll find everything from the Ozarka Water “Every Drop Counts” scholarship, to be given to a student committed to studying earth & environmental sciences, to the TXDOT Grant, for a student who will major in engineering or computers and agree to work for the Texas Department of Transportation for two years after graduation.
My personal favorite is the Melinda Ann Lee Memorial Scholarship, given to a student planning to attend Texas Tech. (OK, I like that one best because my darling daughter, Laura, received it in 2006). Melinda Ann Lee, daughter of longtime LH residents Don and Patsy Lee, was killed by a drunk driver while attending Texas Tech in 1994.
Again this year, the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands and the Lake Highlands Women’s League will give many thousands to several LHHS seniors attending a variety of universities all over the US. The LHWL deadline just passed, but the Exchange Club is accepting applications until March 25. Both organizations will interview applicants in early April and present the scholarships in May. And, by the way, if you’d like to help out, you can still make a donation to the Exchange Club or the Women’s League before the May presentation.
