Lovers of a good explosion were drawn to Lake Highlands Sunday morning for the demolition of the old Holiday Inn at Meadow and Central. "It was scary," said Rachel Langley, a sophomore at South Garland High School. "We drove 25 minutes to come here and watch. It was exciting."

"Our dad talked us into coming," her sister Grasyn told me. "We told him it was too cold to get out of bed, but he said we’d be glad we did." The family watched from the top floor of a nearby parking garage, not far from where I waited with hundreds of other curious gawkers. Grandy’s restaurant across the street was packed afterward with excited voices reliving the series of pops, then the loud boom and cloud of dust. After clearing the site, crews will begin construction of a new mixed-use development, which will include senior living, high-rise condos, and medical offices.
