Dallas Water Utilities reminds residents that time-of-day watering restrictions have resumed. These mandatory restrictions prohibit the watering of landscaping from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. through Oct. 31. Failing to follow the conservation ordinance guidelines could result in fines of $250 to $2,000 per incident.

Texas Center for the Physically Impaired, an organization founded by Lake Highlands resident Robert Langford, seeks donations of used computers and computer parts, which will be refurbished and then shipped free to visually impaired people. According to the organization, 2,700 computers have been donated to the visually impaired during the past five years, including roughly 300 this year. Casa de Vida, a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and any other forms of dementia, is offered weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. Central Expressway. It’s strictly a social program, with no medications or health care administered. Activities include morning snacks, exercise, bingo, crafts and music. Lake Highlands High School graduate Adam Cason recently was elected president of the Association of Student Representatives at Trinity University in Austin, Texas.


IA Interior Architects (IA) announced that Lake Highlands resident Richard Allan Hibbs, AIA has joined IA Interior Architects in Dallas as office and account director. Hibbs is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Texas Society of Architects, CoreNet Global, International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and AIA Dallas. He holds advisory board positions for the interior design programs at Texas Tech University, Texas Christian University and Collin County Community College.

 

Lisa Lawrence of Lake Highlands, 21, daughter of Lillie Lawrence, won the Miss Texas American coed pageant. In November, Lisa will represent Texas in the 25th annual National Miss American Coed Pageant.


The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands recently inducted 14 new members. Dallas CASA is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for abused and neglected children. CASA empowers everyday citizens to speak up in court for the best interest of children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. Volunteers gather information for the court and work with the child welfare system and others to quickly find a safe, permanent home for each child. AARP is seeking volunteers to help with tax counseling and preparation services for all middle and low income tax payers, with special attention to those age 60 or older, for the tax year 2008.  This program provides trained volunteer tax preparer, free of charge, from Feb. 1-April 15, 2009. The program requires that all volunteers attend a short training school in January 2009. Volunteers receive a self-study manual and are required to pass a test approved by IRS.
