Dallas Water Utilities is reminding residents that time-of-day watering restrictions have resumed. These mandatory restrictions prohibit the watering of landscaping from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. April 1 through October 31, 2008. Failing to follow the conservation ordinance guidelines could result in fines of $250 to $2,000 per incident.

Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas is offering a week-long summer singing camp for students entering fourth- through eighth-grade. No audition is necessary to attend the camp. Texas for the Physically Impaired, an organization founded by Lake Highlands resident Robert Langford, is seeking donations of used computers and computer parts, which will be refurbished and then shipped free to visually impaired people. According to the organization, 2,300 computers have been donated to the visually impaired during the past five years, including 450 last year. Casa de Vida, A a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and any other forms of dementia, is offered weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. District 9 Councilman Sheffie Kadane, along with several other council members, met last month with Congressman Jeb Hensarling in his Washington D.C. office. They discussed issues important to the Dallas community, including the Trinity River project and the city’s proposed use of the James Muchert Army Reserve Center in Lake Highlands, which is scheduled to be closed as part of the latest round of base closings.

Lauren Farish and Yingsong Kaping recently received the Character Counts award, presented by the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands to neighborhood students who are exceptional in and out of the classroom. Farish’s activities include Girl’s Service League, Highlandettes, National Honor Society, Young Republicans, Mu Alpha Theta, Excel Club, tutoring, Who’s Who, vacation Bible school volunteer, choir and First Baptist Church of Dallas mission trips. She will study business finance and accounting at Baylor University next year. Kaping’s activities include A Cappella choir, varsity soccer, all-district choir, all-region mixed choir, vacation Bible school volunteer and soccer camps for children. He is interested in music and has won numerous soccer awards and accolades. Kaping will major in Computer Engineering at University of Texas of Dallas next year.
The Lake Highlands Wildcat Club is sponsoring the 2008 Annual Cat Classic Golf Tournament. The online auction begins Thursday, May 9, at midnight and continues through midnight Tuesday, June 10. The golf tournament will be held June 10 at Canyon Creek Country Club. Last year, the event raised $35,000 for athletic programs for Lake Highlands students. Dallas CASA is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for abused and neglected children. CASA empowers everyday citizens to speak up in court for the best interest of children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect.
