On Tuesday, the five inches of rain we got here in Lake Highlands was enough to wash out the Dallas Cup soccer matches at Richland College and Pizza Hut Park. Bad news for the teen soccer players from all over the world who’ve arrived in Dallas and live for the sport, but great news for our family, which enjoyed chatting up the British referees staying with us during the tournament. "Back home," said Danny, "it rains all the time, so we rarely stop play for the weather." Of course, in Manchester, they don’t have White Rock Creek.

On the evening news we watched stranded travellers at DFW, where 1100 flights were cancelled yesterday. The lads took advantage of their break by shopping at Grapevine Mills Outlet Mall, where they purchased Levi’s jeans and other American items made cheaper by the weakened dollar. (We apologized wholeheartedly for asking if the strong Euro made for bargains. Their English pride corrected us – they carry pounds.) We served up some homemade Texas snacks, with spotty success. They wouldn’t touch the guacamole "it’s green!," but they gobbled up the queso. Above all, they marveled at the idea that American families would open their home for two weeks for complete strangers. The pleasure is ours.
