The arrival of Labor Day means the departure of college kids. But it means the arrival something I greatly enjoy – Box Club.

Box Club is a group of moms who all have kids from the same Lake Highlands High School graduating class. We get together while they’re off at colleges all over the United States. We have a little wine and cheese and catch up on all they’ve been doing. How did their internship go? Did they get into the nursing school they wanted? Are they still dating that deadbeat you hate? Or that cutie-pie you like? How’s it going with the roommate from Hell?

I’ve blogged several times about the amazing accomplishments of the kids from our neighborhood. Box Club is a great time to hear all about their honors, awards, and opportunities. Many are rising to leadership positions and serving alongside outstanding students from all over the country.

The best part of Box Club is that we all purchase and bring items to mail to the kids at school. We bring six of one thing, and we leave with a box of six items to send. Moms can be very creative: mini-flashlights, fresh-baked cookies, writing journals, cute pajamas, shower shoes, music CDs, DVD movies, laptop accessories, dorm organizers, and restaurant giftcards.

The kids enjoy receiving the care packages, and friends on their dorm floor learn it’s good to be around when that package arrives. There is usually plenty to share. One time, I got an email from a French boy living down the hall from my daughter. Seems my box contained French chocolates, and he wanted to thank me for making him feel at home. Gotta love Box Club…
