A few months ago, I reported about Max Hartman and his show business endeavors. I recently learned that his sister Melissa ’86 also is in the spotlight these days.

She is appearing in the off-Broadway production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live” at the Atlantic Theatre in New York City. She recently appeared on Good Morning America and MTV promoting the show.

Melissa started out in the theater department at Lake Highlands High School, appearing in many school productions. She continued to study theater and music at Oklahoma University and earned a bachelors in fine arts degree. Melissa has appeared in “Godspell” at the Bucks County Playhouse and “Meet Me in St. Louis” at the Ritz Company Playhouse (both in Pennsylvania), and “The Buddy Holly Story” in Reno, Nev.

Melissa traveled through the Caribbean and Alaska while performing for the Holland American Line on its newest luxury liner, The Maasdam. Other adventures included a one-woman show at a resort, a cabaret show of Kurt Weill music and a production called “What the Hell, Nell.”

I was informed by Sally Hartman (mother of the show business duo) that she has three children in show business. Her oldest daughter, Melinda ’85, is a trial lawyer. Melinda emphasizes that she is indeed a performer – the courtroom is her theater.

ONE MORE ARTIST: An artist of another medium is LH grad Joyce Slater ’66. Her pencil drawings recently were featured in a show celebrating the one-year anniversary of Aardvark Studios in Garland. She is one of 20 local artists featured in Aardvark’s permanent collection. The Sept. 16 opening of “One Mo Show” was a collaboration of new works focusing on the concept of “one.” To see the exhibit or to find more details, call 276-0976.

AN ’88 ROUNDUP: Candace Brister ’88, the Outstanding Member and Outstanding Sponsor of 500 Inc., called to let me know what some of the ’88 grads are up to.

Brister, Tommy Hendricks ’88, Alison Montgomery ’88 and Matt Valenta ’87 are all on the Gala for the Arts Committee for 500 Inc. this year.

Brister also informed me that Katy Bonner ’88 and John Brown ’88 were married in August and that Edwin Neil ’88 was married in September.
