The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce has formed a White Rock Task Force, which will coordinate area groups to promote the dredging of White Rock Lake.

The group plans to work with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, the consulting team of Carter and Burgess Inc., and the Dallas City Council to ensure the dredging project is placed on the May bond election.

Volunteers are needed to serve as liaisons to various government officials and community groups. The task force is chaired by Kitty Maxey of the Executive Secretarial School.

Service League Plans ‘Big League Ball’ Feb. 11

The Lakewood Service League will host its 13th annual auction party, the Big League Ball, at the Southland Center Hotel, 400 N. Olive, on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Athletic attire is the dress code, and sports celebrities will be attending. Live and silent auctions also will be held. Among the donated items available for auction are shopping sprees, resort packages, dinners at local restaurants, and jewelry.

Proceeds from the event benefit neighborhood service organizations and schools. Since 1982, the annual event has raised more than $300,000 for neighborhood non-profits. MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS: Scofield Memorial Church will begin a new program in January called Mothers of Preschoolers. The national program is for mothers in the same phase of life. Meetings include parenting education, group discussion and craft time. The group will meet every other Friday, beginning Jan. 13. Cost is $6 per meeting. For registration, call 349-6043.

REALTORS SELECTED: Neighborhood Realtors Ray Hardin, Susan Howard and Glenda Jackson were selected to participate in the Greater Dallas Area Realtors Leadership training program. The program is designed to prepare participants to be leaders in real estate and their community.

Hardin is with RE/MAX Associates of Dallas, Howard is with Ebby Halliday, Realtors, and Jackson is with Whiteside Associates.

SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS PLANNED: Winners of the East of Town, Best Around Small Business Awards will be announced at the January luncheon of the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Deadline for nominations is Dec. 2. Author Jerry White, director of SMU’s Caruth Institute of Owner Managed Business, will be the featured speaker. The luncheon is scheduled at noon Jan. 25 at the Lakewood Country Club, 6430 Gaston.

THEATER FOR CHILDREN: Dallas Theater Center is accepting applications for its spring classes for children ages 3 ½ to 18. Classes are available in creative theater, acting and musical theater. The classes meet Jan. 9-April 8, and tuition ranges from $153-$217. Classes are held once a week at the Kalita Humphreys Theater, 3636 Turtle Creek. KIDS GO BEHIND THE SCENES: KidFilm will conduct a video contest for children. All videos must be shot and produced entirely by a child or group of children and submitted on a non-returnable VHS tape by Dec. 15 to the USA Film Festival office, 2917 Swiss, Dallas 75204.

Entries should be suitable for family viewing. Only 10 minutes of each video will be judged, so cue movies to the best 10 minutes. Winning videos will be shown at the AMC Glen Lakes Theatres during KidFilm ’95 Jan. 21-22

AUCTION TO BENEFIT SHELTER: Cowboys country and western night club, 7331 Gaston, will host a benefit auction Dec. 4 for Wings of Mercy, a shelter for battered women and children. The auction starts at 9:30 p.m., but the club opens at 4 p.m. for dance lessons.

The shelter will receive a percentage of the club’s $3 admission charge, as well as auction proceeds. A local radio personality will act as auctioneer for items such as overnight get-aways, jewelry and autographed Dallas Cowboys footballs and T-shirts.
