There’s a neat column that periodically appears in the House and Garden section of the Dallas Morning News. Called “Pass It On,” the column supports a different kind of recycling.

Readers forward short descriptions of things they no longer want, including craft supplies, landscaping items, office supplies, and equipment and remodeling materials. Basically, anything. The notices are compiled and printed with names and phone numbers, providing a no-cost opportunity for a readers’ swap.

This seems like a great way to recycle something you don’t want, but think someone else could use. Non-profit organizations also can advertise requests. With any luck another reader may be able to help you out.

The Morning News’ “Pass It On” is 10 months old, and many newspapers are following its lead, including the Advocate – with a twist.

The only drawback to the Morning News’ column is that you have to drive to far corners of the Metroplex to find many of the items discussed. But with the Advocate and our neighborhood recycling column, the items are more likely to be found in our area.

So go through your garages, attics and closets, and send information about your items (or needs) to Readers’ Swap, Advocate Community Newspapers, 6510 Abrams, Suite 220, Dallas, 75231. Comments and suggestions also are welcome.
