A friend recently suggested I try Eduardo’s in Skillman Village at LBJ. I took the advice and am glad I did.

It’s a family-owned restaurant hidden in a shopping strip, well-lit and open, with prompt service and good food. It tastes as if someone’s Italian mom is in the kitchen cooking family favorites.

Whether you make an appetizer your dinner or order an entree, you will not leave the place hungry: The servings are large.

Eduardo’s is open for lunch and dinner. There are daily lunch specials such as lasagna Zitti on Mondays. Specials are $5.25 and include soup or salad and garlic rolls.

The dinner menu offers a house specialty – the stromboli dinner. One of Eduardo’s own creations, it’s a pizza boat stuffed with smoked ham, hamburger, pepperoni and two types of sausages with mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and spice. Not a bad deal for $6.95, and it comes with soup or salad and rolls.

The chicken piccata and pasta (two chicken breasts cooked in a lemon butter sauce) also is delicious.

Whether you’re a vegatarian or you like grilled lamb or beef, Basha, the new Mediterranean restaurant on Greenville across from Whole Foods, has something for you.

The restaurant is small and elegant. And even though it just opened, the service as well as the cuisine is impeccable.

The lunch and dinner menus are similar, with additional items for dinner and cheaper prices at lunch. Basha’s rendition of the Tabouleh Salad is fresh parsley with cracked wheat (more parsley than wheat in this case), cucumbers, fresh mint, tomatoes and lemon juice. The ingredients are so fresh and the spices so well-blended, the dish gives tabouleh a whole new meaning.

Don’t overlook the Herb Cheese pie or the Gyros Pita sandwich. Or try the roasted eggplant dip or the Bashas Houmos Dip. The crusted pistachio chicken is stuffed with Syrian feta cheese and served with roma tomato coulis. Lamb shanks and a beef dish called Kafta Shish also are served.

The prices range from $4.50 to $12.95. There is a small wine list and knock-your-socks-off desserts that are prepared fresh daily.
