More than $40,000 has been raised by the Abrams Road Beautification Committee during the past two years to pay for landscaping and maintenance for the Abrams Road medians between Kingsley and Meadowknoll.

But the group still needs to raise $15,000 to finish the work.

Money is needed to finish the planting of low-maintenance prairie buffalo grass, place liriope at the base of trees, and complete the dirt work.

More than 650 people donated from $5 to $1,000 in the past two years, and more than two dozen businesses donated money, services and materials.

Rec Center is Site of Halloween Carnival

The annual Lake Highlands Halloween Carnival will be held from 3-7 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Lake Highlands North Recreation Center.

More than 400 students from Lake Highlands High School and Forest Meadow and Lake Highlands junior high schools will participate in the event, underwritten by the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands in conjunction with the recreation center advisory council, the high school exchange club and various business supporters.

More than 1,000 people attended last year’s carnival, and this year’s promises more of the same sort of fun, organizers say. The family-oriented event will feature food, booths, and games.

Historic League to Open Preservation Center

The Historic Preservation League will open the Wilson House Preservation Center during the next few months. The center will serve as a clearinghouse for information about historic buildings and historic neighborhoods.

Its marketing center will promote the City’s historic neighborhoods. The resource center will feature information about techniques, contractors and other issues regarding rehabilitating older homes.

The center, with its touch-screen computers, will provide presentations about historic sites, neighborhoods and preservation activities. Desktop publishing equipment in the publications center will provide neighborhood groups with a place to put together newsletters and brochures.

Lake Highlands Man to Run for Judge

Mark Nancarrow, the chief felony prosecutor with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, will run in the Republican primary in the spring as a candidate for the 204th Judicial District Court.

Nancarrow has worked for the district attorney’s office for 12 years. He is a life-long resident of Dallas, is married and has two children.

Seniors Investment Seminar Scheduled

Bank One and Clements, Realtors have scheduled a free seminar Oct. 14 for seniors interested in learning about ways to invest proceeds from the sale of a home.

The seminar, “Getting Top Dollar for Home Equity – Investing for Maximum Income,” will be held from 10 a.m.-noon at Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams, in room 154 north.

Among the topics to be discussed are home marketing tips, investment alternatives, and ways to ensure a safe, regular monthly income.

NEW CHIEF: Roger Duncan is the new deputy chief at the Dallas Police Department’s Northeast Substation, which serves Lake Highlands. Duncan succeeds Manny Vasquez, who was promoted to Executive Assistant Chief last month. Duncan was formerly deputy chief for support services.

INTERFAITH DISCUSSION: “Intermarriage as a Family Affair” will be the topic of a discussion scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Temple Shalom. Rabbi David Stern and Debby Stein of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations will lead the talk. For information, call 960-6641.
