It seems as if every time I’m out and about, I come across the infamous interlocking LH logo. Those two simple letters are a terrific ice-breaker and an immediate conversation booster.
The interlocking L and H are symbolic of the way the alumni respond to each other, and it makes our large world a much smaller and more enjoyable one.
Jim Corcoran ’70 and Kathy Russell Smith ’70 didn’t know how really small the world is until they recently met in Fort Collins, Colo. Jim was building a new home there and liked the blue color of a nearby home. He stopped and asked a man working in the yard about the color, and Jim was told he’d have to talk with the man’s wife.
So, Kathy came out to discuss the color with Jim. And after a lengthy conversation, they discovered they were both from Dallas – and Lake Highlands.
A further twist to the story is that both Jim and Kathy were LH sophomore favorites, and she is his son’s English teacher at a Colorado school. Talk about a small world.
And then there’s the other side of the coin, in which some alums are taking a small world and making an even bigger world for themselves and, hopefully, a better world for the rest of us.
Jason Winn ’92, John “JJ” Leonard ’91, Katherine Novak and Bernard Correia are attending the U.S. Naval Academy, studying to be naval officers.
And Paul Rogers ’84 and Stephanie Cox Rogers ’84 recently had a little boy join their small world. Son Caleb was born about eight months ago and is living with his parents in California. Paul was president of the ’84 class and is helping organize the group’s 10-year reunion. If you’d like information concerning the reunion, give me a call.
Matthew Goforth ’91 has been busy at Hardin-Simmons University, making parents Sam ’67 and Charlotte Goforth proud. Matthew is this year’s class vice president and is the Theta Alpha Zeta Rush chairman for 1993. He and two friends also won a cash award and trophy at their All-School Sing.
You may have seen Matthew during the holidays working at the Gap store in NorthPark Shopping Center.
We’ve been asked to remind 1968 graduates that the Class of ’68 has tentatively scheduled its 25th reunion for July 21.
The Class of ’73 also will be holding its 20th reunion this summer (no date has been set), and the Class of ’83 will be holding its 10-year reunion May 22.
Before attending these functions, consider ordering LH alum caps, golf shirts, bumper stickers, T-shirts, sweats and other logo items from the LHHS Alumni Association.
One of our alum readers, Doug Pasley ’78, is taking this monthly column out on a note – a musical note, that is.
This month, Doug will receive a prestigious award for “best musical score” from Media Masters of Chicago, which oversees all published commercials.
Besides commercial jingles, Doug also writes and publishes songs. He says Sunrise Records has contacted him for possible publication of three of his latest songs.
