The days where kids play with cardboard boxes aren’t over yet, thanks to Richardson Gifted’s Cardboard Challenge.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit, which supports Richardson ISD’s gifted students and programs. Based on Caine’s Arcade, the Cardboard Challenge allow students to create games with cardboard, tape and small toys.

With so many initiatives geared toward technology, the event gives children a chance to use their imagination, says Laura Stead, Richardson Gifted’s programs vice president.

“Kids don’t have to have a lot to start with, and kids can be creative geniuses,” she says.

The Cardboard Challenge is slated Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at 701 W. Beltline Road. All students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade are welcome to attend. The program costs $40 and includes lunch.
