Collected school supplies from the Spread the Love event at LHJH

In honor of February, the month of love, and their new principal, Carrie Breedlove, the Lake Highlands Junior High PTA created a project to equip students and teachers with school supplies to finish the year. The campaign, called Spread the Love, invited parents to pitch in and donate simple items like pencils, paper, markers and glue sticks.

“We are receiving donations from all over the LH community,” said an astonished Michele Davis, chairman of the Ways and Means committee, who coordinated the project with PTA President Carolyn Potter. “Many are donating that do not even have kids who attend LHJH. The outpouring of love, support and incredible generosity is overwhelming.”

Davis, parent of a 7th grader at the school and a newcomer to LHJH, said the community has risen to meet the challenge – and then some.

“I have never seen a community like Lake Highlands,” said Breedlove, who admitted she had no idea how much excitement the project would create. “To say I am beyond grateful is an understatement. I reached out to teachers asking for a ‘wish list’ of items they would want to fill their classrooms until the end of the year. All I said was that we had an angel who wanted to make this happen for them. Little did I know that one angel would turn into hundreds.”

“LHJH has funding shortfalls, likely no different than many schools,” said Davis. “When a community doesn’t know there is a need, it’s hard to fix it.”

If you’d like to donate school supplies, you may choose items from the online list here. Contributions may be dropped off by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 at Davis’ State Farm office next door to Resident Taqueria.
