8 things to do in Lake Highlands this weekend: Arboretum concerts, rockets, and more

Garden Gigs at the Dallas Arboretum.

This Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Arboretum hosts Garden Gigs, featuring local artists performing on the verdant grounds. Zach Coffey brings his Red Dirt country sound and is joined by Texas singer-songwriter Becky Middleton. Tickets are $10.

The Bath House Cultural Center is hosting the nineteenth annual Festival of Independent Theatres starting this Friday, July 14, until Saturday, Aug. 5. The festival showcases individual theatre companies and gives them a chance to display some of their work. Theatre companies Bootstraps Comedy Theater and Risk Theatre Initiative will be presenting their plays on opening day. Festival passes start at $63-$73 and single tickets are $20. Blast off this summer at Skillman-Southwestern branch library and learn about chemical reactions by building a rocket powered by Alka Setlzers. This free event in this Thursday at 3 p.m. and is for ages six and up.

Kids can text their design skills at the Audelia branch library this Friday at 2 p.m., where the can plan a design on graph paper which will be turned into a piece of art. The event is free.

Uncle Calvin’s has more live music this Friday night at 8 p.m., when Natalie Gelman brings her contemporary yet timeless songs to Dallas. Nathan McEuen, who has been prolifically making music since 2005 across the country, will also perform. Tickets are from $15-$18.

Next Tuesday, at 10 a.m., bring the kids to café at the Shops at Park Lane Whole Foods for crafts, storytime and healthy snacks. This event is for ages 3-6, and is free.

Half Price Books hosts New York Times bestselling author Linda Castillo to discuss and sign copies of her newest mystery novel, “Down a Dark Road: A Kate Burkholder Novel.” The event is Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and is free.

Jazz pianist Charles “Chaz” Winslow will preform Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at CC Young’s The Point. Enjoy coffee and beverages at this free event, which is open to the public.
