The proposed expansion — the re-zoning request for which Richardson ISD filed May 8 — follows an extensive battle over how to handle overcrowding, especially in the section of RISD surrounding the school.

The district initially aimed to build a new school nearby, but complaints from families and homeowners zoned to White Rock Elementary were immediate, loud and organized.

Here’s a bit of background on that, in a brief feature from our April 2017 magazine.

(The property purchased for the subsequently abandoned plan is now for sale).

Now, down to the nitty gritty details of the expansion, according to the paperwork:

The RISD proposes to expand existing public school facility at 9229 Chiswell Road, which presently contains White Rock Elementary. The new construction on the site is an approximately 88,956 square foot expansion for 10 classrooms, a gym, a new cafeteria, specialty classrooms, library and outdoor playspace. School grades will not change and will allow for future growth in the area.

Expect about seven classrooms per grade level K-6. Spaces required for the are 78. The district will provide 91.

The planning and zoning staff will review the request June 13. Prior to approval, public feedback is still considered.
