The Dallas Arboretum’s “Cool Thursday Concert Series” is back for another season, launching this week with Bidi Bidi Banda, a tribute to Selena. The show is at 7:30, but gates open at 6 p.m. There will be food trucks on site, so grab a blanket and have a musical picnic. Tickets are $10-$28 for a single show, or you can buy a pass for the whole season. The series continues with Who’s Bad, a Michael Jackson tribute, next week followed by Walk the Line, a homage to Johnny Cash.

A Peep at the Coops, a one-day tour of private urban chicken coops throughout Lake Highlands and East Dallas is Saturday, May 7. The event features some of the most innovative coops for raising chickens in Dallas, plus experts to answer your urban-farming questions. The event also features a country market with local artisan and food vendors, community information booths, live entertainment, food trucks and other activities. It’s 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and tourists can pick up a map at event headquarters, Moss Haven Farm (9202 Moss Farm Lane). Purchase tickets for $10 online or at the farm. Under 12 peep free.

Dallas Children’s Theater

This weekend through May 27, see ‘James and the Giant Peach’ at Dallas Children’s Theater, 5938 Skillman St. (214.978.0110, dct.org). DCT tackles Roald Dahl’s whimsical tale about a boy who escapes his cruel aunts on a giant peach. The performance is recommended for children ages 5
and older. Tickets run $15-$28.

Friday, May 5, catch an acoustic show by Houston-based musician Brian Kalinec, who performs after up-and-coming artist Amy Vanessa Goloby with her sentimental folk songs. The show starts at 8 p.m.
at Uncle Calvin’s Coffee Shop (9555 N. Central Expressway, 214.363.0044, unclecalvins.org). Tickets are $15-$18.

Celebrate all of the natural wonders of White Rock Lake this Saturday during the fifth annual Native Plants and Prairies Day. Take a nature walk led by experts, see and make artwork and get up close with raptors and snakes from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The free event is sponsored by the North Texas Master naturalists and takes place at the Bath House Cultural Center.

The White Rock ‘n’ Roll 1- 5- and 10-mile race is Saturday, May 6, at Winfrey Point. The races begin at 8 a.m. Race day registration ends at 7:30. It’s best to register online here. Members pay $50 for the 5 miler, $65 for the 1-mile/5-mile combo, $70 for the 10 miler and $85 for the 10-mile/1-mile combo. Non-members pay an extra $10.

Saturday, May 6, it’s C. C. Young’s Spirit is Ageless Awards & Celebration, an event that highlights the creativity of local artists and writers, regardless of their age. Lily Cabatu Weiss, executive director of the Dallas Arts District, is the guest speaker. RSVP is required via 214.841.2831 or ccyoung.org. Takes place at The Point at C. C. Young (4847 W. White Rock dog rescue Duck Team 6 is running low on dog food, and needs your help this Saturday. The nonprofit will be at Pet Supplies Plus (6060 E. Mockingbird) from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. trying to “Stuff the SUV” with dog food so they can feed more homeless pets. They’ll also accept donations of leashes and collars.

Take One Improv celebrates its 10th year of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”-style shows with a performance this Saturday at 11 p.m. at the Pocket Sandwich Theater (5400 E. Mockingbird). Tickets are $5 at the door.

Bath House Cultural Center

The Bath House Cultural Center marks the opening of “The Extraordinary Tale: Magic Realism in Art” with a free reception on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. The show includes works by artists from Texas, California, North Carolina, Mexico and El Salvador. Also opening this weekend is “Contemplation: Photographs by Gabriella Castaneda Pruitt.” The artist will be on hand this Saturday from 7-9 p.m. to discuss her work with attendees. Both shows will be on display through June 3 and are free to visit any time the Bath House is open to the public.

Saturday is Free Comic Book Day at Frontrunner Comics (9660 Audelia), which means what it says — drop in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 6 and score a free comic book, plus free snacks and candy.

Teen Job Fair. You know what they say about idle hands and all — make sure your teen has a summer job. This event is sponsored by Lake Highlands Public Improvement District and organized by Public Safety Coordinator Vicky Taylor, who apparently is thinking preventatively. The fair is 11-1:30 in the Lake Highlands High School gym. So far we know Chick Fil A , JcPenney, Tom Thumb, Bed, Bath and Beyond, jump Street, YMCA, Kroger, AMC Northpark, Kohls, Starbucks, Traders Joe, Dave and Buster, Dallas Aquatics, Kelly Services, UPS,  Kids U, American Eagle, Shady’s, Victoria’s Secret, Travel X, Vans, Medieval Times, J Crew,  and IntraPac will be on hand. There’s something for younger teens too—for ages 15 and younger, businesses representing summer camps including Perot Museum, YMCA, ASI Gymanstics, Dallas public library, PACE, The Promentheus, Color Me Empowered, Park Cities Baptist Church, Happy Feet and DPD P.A.L.S. will be there.
