Davion Hicks was No. 4 on the LHHS Wildcats football team. This was his senior year.

A large group of students gathered Sunday in the park across the street from Lake Highlands to mourn, remember and honor classmate Davion Hicks, a 17-year-old Lake Highlands High School senior who was killed in a car accident over last week’s spring break.

Over the weekend, Lake Highlands High School principal Frank Miller sent notice of Davion’s death to Lake Highlands’ “Wildcat family.”

“Davion lost his life during spring break due to a motor vehicle incident. I ask that you keep his family, friends and teachers in your prayers and thoughts as they mourn the loss of Davion.”

Miller went on to advise that counselors would be on hand this week to support students struggling with the situation.

“Students will be allowed to visit at anytime with counselors during the school day as they process this sudden and tragic information,” Miller notes.

While verifiable details about the accident that killed Davion are scarce at the moment, a family friend, via an online fundraising effort, explains that Davion was killed in an 18-wheeler accident last Tuesday.

Davion was best known for his prowess on the football field, as well as a sweet and funny nature, according to his friends, teammates and coaches.

“Davion started as a Pee-Wee Wildcat at a very young age and this past football season, he played as a Varsity Wildcat. Davion was a senior at Lake Highlands High School and he will be truly missed. We can only imagine the heartbreak that [his mother] Kesha and her family has had to endure with Davion being called home. Death is unexpected and especially at the young tender age of 17.  Kesha is needing the help and support of our community to band together and show her how much we love her and Davion,” according to information on the YouCaring Compassionate Crowdfunding page.

We have reached out to some of those who knew Davion as well as to authorities who can tell us more about the circumstances of the young athlete’s death, and we will continue to report any new information.
