JJ’s Cafe will take over the adjacent space to create JJ’s Hall.

Back in 2010, Jose Ramirez bought the divey Divine Coffee Shop at 10233 Northwest Highway and transformed it into one of our neighborhood’s foremost breakfast, brunch, lunch and, eventually, dinner destinations — JJ’s Café. He made it his own, expanded the menu, remodeled the interior, launched regular philanthropical efforts and really got to know his customer base. You can see how when you visit; watch him bolt table to table chatting up his guests. He’s quick to point out the contributions of his wife, Josefina Orozco, who works tirelessly behind the scenes, “looking over everything.”

The hard work is paying off, Ramirez says. Early this month, he opened JJ’s Bistro in Carrolton — in a space that once was home to Victor’s, at 3720 N. Josey Ln.

Here in Lake Highlands, Ramirez bought up the space that belonged to Ra Ra’s Closet, the resale shop that announced its closure last summer. He says he plans to use the extra footage to host private events, under the name JJ’s Hall.

This Saturday, the neighborhood JJ’s Cafe hosts its annual holiday party, featuring Santa from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., plus free mimosas, music, raffle prizes and cake to celebrate an official five years in business.
