For a bit of nostalgia, it was 55 years ago on September 1, 1961 that Lake Highlands High School played their first varsity game in school history. That game was played at the Greenville Avenue Stadium, next to the RISD Administration Building, and LHHS beat Anna 16-12. Also making their debut were the Varsity Cheerleaders, Wildcat Band and Highlandettes.

According to LHHS alum Chuck Carona, who wore jersey #87 on that team, the Wildcats went on to defeat varsity teams from Red Oak, Kemp, Howe and Fort Worth Christian that season. You can read more of Chuck’s remembrances of that first varsity season here.

If you’re headed to tonight’s game, things might feel a bit different.

The Wildcat Club is hosting a mixer for Forest Meadow and Lake Highlands Junior High families on the party patio under the press box. You can bring your own food and beverages (no alcohol is allowed), and the cost is $12 per person (or $4 for season ticket holders). Gates open at 5 p.m. and interested families should call Sherry Hicks at 214-533-7311 to make arrangements.

Also tonight: the release of the All-Sports Program, LH’s photo-filled senior send-off and fundraiser for athletic programs at LHHS, LHJH and FMJH.

Go Cats!
