You know Caren. She’s the LH mom who overcame poverty and created Pamper Lake Highlands, the non-profit which first provided diapers, then ESL training, parenting classes, recovery services and a host of other aid, for struggling and single moms in our neighborhood. Pamper LH has joined forces with another great group, Mommies In Need, to create Camp Kindness, designed to “teach our children the many ways they can give back to their community and show everyday kindness to the people and the world around them.”

Each of the six camp days will be its own mini-camp, featuring a daily theme and activities from local non-profits. They’ll play traditional East African games and make bead necklaces with the folks from the Akola Project while learning about the work this group does in Uganda. They’ll plant seeds and learn about nutrition as the folks from CitySquare take them through activities including composting remains of their lunches. They’ll learn to become “amazing over-comers” as they take face-painting, art and karate lessons from folks with a variety of disabilities.

“You don’t need to let tough things in your life stop you,” Caren told me, describing the over-comer lesson and the folks, including a quadruple amputee, who’ll teach it.

The nannies of Mommies In Need will lead the camp, and they’re all background-checked, CPR-certified and highly trained. Several have teaching certifications and backgrounds in children’s education.

The camp will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 5-21 at Forest Meadow Baptist Church, 9150 Church Road. The cost is $45 per day for ages 3-9 and $30 per day for ages 9-17 (older students are encouraged to serve as “Camp Leaders” and may receive service hours for school or other organizations). A “Kindness Celebration,” complete with camper-made bake sale and lemonade stand will be held from 1-2 on the final day. Proceeds will benefit The Stewpot.

Registration may be done online here. If you wish, you may also donate registration tuition for a Lake Highlands child who can’t afford to pay.

“We believe that exposure to diversity is a big part of kids learning kindness,” proclaims the website. “We will invite as many children from the Mommies In Need and the Pamper Lake Highlands programs as possible based on our sponsorships.”
