Dog lovers, one of Dallas’ most enduring, impactful, respected no-kill animal shelters, Operation Kindness, this Saturday hosts its annual Dog Day Afternoon from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Flag Pole Hill.
And this year — the nonprofit’s 40th in business — is special. In addition to the usual festivities — such as low-cost and free (for the first 125) microchipping, complimentary pet consults with local vets and trainers, impressive performances by talented mutts — Operation Kindness, in collaboration with sponsor Blue Buffalo and Catering by Larry will attempt to beat the world record for largest canine birthday cake. It would break the existing record set in April 2011 in London, when a 150.91 pound cake was baked in honor of the Royal Wedding. The Operation Kindness cake aims to weigh in at about 170 pounds and, promises Operation Kindness CEO Jim Hanopy, it will feature healthy, natural Blue Buffalo dog food, mashed potato and sweet potato icing, carrots and peas as confetti and Blue Buffalo treats as garnishes. Watching more than 600 canine guests gobble, gratis, their pieces of the pastry, will warm your heart, provided you have one. The first 100 or so slices come in a commemorative Blue Buffalo dog bowl, so arrive early.
