Flowers break through in the MPE Outdoor Learning Center

Merriman Park Elementary’s Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) has received a seed grant from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The award is given in association with the Center’s project partner, Native American Seed. MPE will also have access to the Center’s “Exploring the Native Plant World” curriculum, which integrates sciences and the liberal arts, as part of their OLC planting lessons.

Lady Bird Johnson, former first lady from Texas, and actress Helen Hayes founded the Center in 1982 to protect and preserve North America’s native plants and natural landscapes. Since then, the Center has become one of the country’s most credible research institutions and effective advocates for native plants. The Center’s education programs for children and adults teach people about their natural surroundings and how to grow native plants in their own backyards.

Congratulations, MPE students and staff!
