Potential Costco site

It’s not at the old Steakley Chevrolet site on Northwest Highway, which was long-rumored to be of interest to Costco until a Houston company bought it for redevelopment. Instead, this week Costco asked the City of Dallas for zoning to turn a roughly 13-acre piece of land between Coit and Central Expressway, just north of Churchill Way, into a Costco Warehouse with fuel stations.

This is the same property Costco was eyeing roughly a year ago; TxDOT, which owned the land, priced it at more than $1 million an acre and no one, including Costco, made a bid. Costco has been looking to enter the Dallas market for some time but has been holding out for the best deal.

We don’t know Costco’s timeline for the warehouse. We’ve called the company and its representatives in the zoning case to learn more information.

The buildings on the property, just east of the Medical City Hospital complex, currently are unoccupied, and the land most recently was used as a transit station park and ride, according to the zoning request. The land is zoned for mixed uses and Costco’s Jan. 25 request asks for a Planned Development District (PD) to meet its store criteria. The hearing before the City Plan Commission is slated for Feb. 9.
