Deputy Chief Andrew Acord says it refers to planned improvements to the department’s technological capabilities. DPD will build a small microwave tower to beam data downtown, allowing use of new body cameras, which DPD began using September 1. The new tower “is really more of a thick pole with crossbars and antennae,” says Acord.

About 55 officers in the central patrol division have already received body cameras, and about 11 at our station at Audelia and Northwest Highway will receive theirs soon. When their shift is ended, officers will download data from their camera to a cloud-based system from the docks at the station. Thus, the need for a tower.

City staff have recommended approval of the project and construction should follow shortly.
