A Valentine’s Day crash at Northwest Highway and Jupiter left two recent Conrad High School grads dead. No one has definitively explained why the girls’ Chevy Impala crossed the median at 6:45 Saturday morning, crashing into a Camry — the driver of that car was hospitalized with injuries. Both of the fatalities — Veronica Moreno and Stephanie Reyes — were just 19 years old. One reportedly was a mother of two. Conrad High is in Vickery Meadow, a close neighbor to Lake Highlands.
Police Chief David Brown writes an op-ed for the Dallas Morning News, and he recalls his days working the northeast patrol: “Working in Lake Highlands during the early 2000s felt no different than working my old ’hood in Oak Cliff,” Brown writes. “People responded the same, wanted the same feeling of safety and connection to their police officers. I felt as much at home in Lake Highlands as I did in any part of southern Dallas, including my old neighborhood.”
In Oklahoma, lawmakers voted to cut funding for Advanced Placement U.S. History classes, because, reports New York Magazine, the course framework emphasizes “what is bad about America” and doesn’t teach “American exceptionalism,” words they quoted from Oklahoma Representative Dan Fisher. Oklahoma reportedly is just the first of several southern states, including Texas, to take issue with the curriculum. (Note: My daughter, who attends an RISD school, brought this to my attention yesterday. They discussed it in class. In the near future, we will look into this, from a more-local perspective.)
