JCPenney

JCPenney never was on my shopping radar until one opened a couple miles from home, at Timber Creek Crossing (Northwest Highway and Skillman).

I occasionally shop there for gifts and housewares or clothing, and before a big date I apply my makeup using all the tester items at the in-store Sephora (just kidding, I don’t date).

When JCPenney announced that it would close 40 stores, costing some 2,250 people jobs, I was nervous. Not because I can’t live without it. I totally could. But because of what it would say about the success or lack thereof of the Timber Creek development, for which so many trees lost their lives — all of the closings were based on “local economies and regional consumer shopping patterns,” a spokesperson told the Morning News.

As a whole, the Plano-based JCPenney had a more profitable November and December than last year, due in no small part to the Timber Creek store’s ability to, as writer Maria Halkias put it, “pull off a good, old fashioned Black Friday frenzy.”
