An overnight fire at the Gatewood Senior Citizen Complex on Ridgecrest, near Greenville and Park Lane, not far from Sam Tasby Middle School, claimed the lives of two residents.
Names of the deceased have not yet been released.
The scene reportedly was dramatic. More than 300 people were removed from the complex. Initial reports say the fire might have started in the fourth-floor apartment where the bodies were located. Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans told the media that “the large response to the blaze was initiated primarily out of concern for the evacuation of residents, rather than the size of the fire.”
The Red Cross was on site, helping the displaced residents.
