Varsity Grill, located at 9310 Forest Lane, has the feel of a 1950s diner, but when it comes to food and service, owner Thom Turnock’s Lake Highlands establishment is cutting edge.

Diners have rewarded Turnock’s emphasis on consistency and quality not only by patronizing his place but also in voting his the Best Burger in the neighborhood.

“I have to pay tribute to the staff,” he says. “They are great and they reliably produce a quality product.”

Patrons appreciate the choice beef and fresh produce, Turnock says, but the bread really makes the burgers special. Made fresh daily, diners can choose from jalapeno-cheddar, sweet sourdough or whole wheat. The buns don’t fall apart or overwhelm the flavor of the grilled patty. The final product is a good old-fashioned satisfying burger.

Vegetarians have a garden burger option. Sweet potato fries, salads and wraps round out the Varsity Grill menu. Since opening five years ago, Turnock says he has enjoyed tremendous support from the Lake Highlands community, as well as neighboring areas. Word of mouth and social media has kept business booming.

Runners up in the Best Of burger contest are Goodfriend and Jakes.
