The Lake Highlands Area Early Childhood PTA started way back in 1959 when a few families decided to register officially as a Parent Teacher Association. Today the nonprofit serves some 250 neighborhood families. Members — generally parents of infant to 6 year olds — have access to playgroups organized by child’s age and/or neighborhood, adult interest groups, general informational meetings, community outreach projects and year-round children’s activities.

Though the group is associated with the Richardson ISD, one does not need to live in the boundaries to join. The fee is $35 per annum and interested readers can learn more, register or find contact information for the group’s leaders and senior members here on the LHAECPTA website.

If you are interested in joining or wish to learn more, attend the Sept. 13 kickoff party for the 2014-2015 school year. Free and open to the public, this event is the ideal opportunity to get a feel for the organization while the kids enjoy bounce houses, train rides, music and more. It runs from 10 a.m. – noon at Merriman Park Elementary, 7101 Winedale.
