A couple of weeks ago our post about the new Lake Highlands branding initiative and logo inspired intense (in some cases outraged) discussion in the comments section. The logo alone, when posted on Facebook page You know you’re from Lake Highlands if …, generated hundreds of heated comments, most of them expressing distaste for the design. Someone even started a petition to “retract the logo”, and a bunch of people signed. After the negative response the branding committee canceled a presentation at the Exchange Club Lake Highlands and postponed the sales of stickers bearing the logo.

So I was quite surprised to read this week’s Sounding Off post in the Richardson/Lake Highlands section of the Dallas Morning News.

They ask readers what they think of the community’s new logo. Most of the published responses express a positive opinion of the logo.

“I live in the section known as ‘L streets.’ The new logo for the whole area is attractive and accents our pride in Lake Highlands. We have a great community and I like the idea of the new logo,” writes Marna Irby of Lake Highlands.

Interestingly, several of the respondents report that they live outside Lake Highlands — Richardson, Far North Dallas and Northeast Dallas, for example. Given that the logo is intended to sell (so to speak) Lake Highlands to folks outside the community, maybe this insight is worthwhile.

“The Lake Highlands new logo reveals a strong image of roots, branches and completeness,” notes one Richardson resident.

The DMN reader feedback isn’t all positive. Eric White of Lake Highlands expresses doubt and poses a good question (one which also was reflected by Advocate readers/commenters): I think the real question is, does our neighborhood need a logo, or a branding committee, when the task at hand should be finding ways to provide actual public improvement?”
