If you are looking for a family-friendly event to occupy kids that are home from school this Memorial Day, head on down to the Lake Highlands Town Center for the Camp Sweeney 5k and Art & Play Festival. The 5k, at 8 a.m., is a fundraiser for scholarships to Camp Sweeney, a renowned summer camp for diabetes-diagnosed youths. The post-race party features a local-art show, face painting, food trucks, rides, games and vendors sharing information about Camp Sweeney, diabetes and related issues. It’s free and sponsored by the Lake Highlands Public Improvement District; race cost is $30-$35 and you can register for it online here.

Barb Schmidt, life coach, international lecturer and founder of Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life will visit the Lincoln Park Barnes and Noble on Tuesday May 27 at 7 p.m. to speak about her new book, “The Practice: Simple tools for managing stress, finding inner peace and uncovering happiness.” Since it’s release on May 13, Schmidt’s book was named Amazon’s best-selling meditation book.
