Neighbors who live in the neighborhood that backs up to Lake Highlands Freshman Center or the fields at Lake Highlands High School are dealing these days with the sounds and inconveniences of construction. But the result should be something enjoyable for some — a paved trail for joggers, strollers, cyclists, and students walking to school or the rec center.  The Dallas Park Board voted last September to proceed with the project paid with in 2003 and 2006 bond funds. The city council approved it in October.

The main portion of the new trail previously was an easement owned by Oncor utility company.  It will connect, via sidewalk, to Lake Highlands North Park. To the east it will run along the back of the Freshman Center and high school before spilling into the residential areas. With some work, it could eventually connect to White Rock Trail.

“It may be possible to link this trail southward to the existing White Rock Creek Greenbelt Trail should redevelopment occur along Jackson Branch Creek. Trail follows Oncor row from the White Rock Creek Trail at Harry Moss Park to Arbor Park. The trail uses sidewalk/street connections along Tory Sound and Church Road to route around the DART rail line and Skillman,” according to Park Department documents.

The path will be 12-feet wide and concrete.

In order to utilize the Oncor-owned property, the city agreed on a partnership with Oncor, which allows the city to convert some of its utility corridors to trails; in return the city maintains these corridors.
