Hannah English fundraiserDid you survive Lake Highlands’s Icemaggedon 2013? Now you can show it with a new tee designed by LH mom Katie Fuerst. Proceeds will go to offset medical bills for Hannah English, the Merriman Park 2nd grader recently diagnosed with leukemia.

The pocket t-shirt in blue with icy-white lettering has a crest on the back with kids sledding and Oncor workers climbing power poles – two of the weekend’s most memorable activities.

“Those days were such a fun time, but also all I saw on Facebook was neighbors helping each other,” Katie told me. “We had one of my son’s friends spend the night and heard of families taking other families in – for days. This neighborhood can get very small in times like that.”

Hannah EnglishKatie says LH’s Icemaggedon week is unforgettable, not because of the thickness of the ice or how many people lost power, but because of the many extraordinary acts of kindness neighbors showed to neighbors – even strangers – around them.

“There are times when this neighborhood quite frankly feels too small – everyone knows everyone – and I can tend to be a private person,” said Katie. “Then there are the many more times when the size of this community seems to shrink, and we act like one big family, helping each other out.”
