JG’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers is one of those restaurants I tend to forget about for a while and then when I remember it (especially when it’s after sitting in I-635 traffic for an hour, still needing dinner for four, and short on cash due to a recent wallet theft), I am head-to-toe thrilled with my re-discovery.

It is indeed an old-fashioned burger joint, atmospherically at least. The menu is contemporary, though, featuring salads and vegetarian options. The burgers are big. One-third pound chuck beef. The sort of patties that jut out between fluffy buns. If you order the fixin’s — onions, pickles, cheese, mushrooms, etc. — your burger will be messy and difficult to hold together, but in a good way.

Fries come in sweet potato, tots and cheesy, or opt for the substantially rotund onion rings.

The veggie burger, which I ate with cheese, mayo, onions and mushrooms, was impressive. I’ve tried veggie burgers everywhere. Twisted Root is still my favorite, but JG’s is a strong contender.

To any burger, add bacon, fried egg, blue cheese, chili.

Dieters? Several salads are on the menu. Take out or dine in (so you can have a beer).

Add extra pickles, onions, mustard, mayo and so forth at the convenient condiment bar.

Oh, and do not get out of there without a milkshake.
