What event could possibly bring together a “pet communicator,” a marshmallowy snack and dogs?
It’s this month’s Mystics, Mutts and MoonPies festival at White Rock Lake. About 20 animal rescue groups will provide information about pet adoption. Pet psychic Robin Hunt will communicate with animals – both living and dead.
And everyone receives free MoonPies.
Lake Highlands residents Beth Highgenboten and Jinna Russell conceived the inaugural event as a fundraiser for Weimaraner Rescue of North Texas.
“It’s gonna be out there, but it’s gonna be really fun,” Highgenboten says.
Highgenboten and Russell, who both work as counselors, own three Weimaraners. They also volunteer for Weimaraner Rescue.
The first time the pair helped with a rescue, they drove halfway to Houston to pick up a dog suffering a shotgun wound. They were immediately hooked.
“I think the counseling part in us comes out,” Highgenboten says.
Weimaraner Rescue takes in abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and tries to find them new homes. The group’s website lists about 40 dogs eligible for adoption and another 18 who need foster homes.
The Mystics, Mutts and MoonPies festival is free. Profits from the vendor booth rentals and donations benefit the rescue group, Highgenboten says.
Highgenboten expects more than 20 vendors selling everything from art to pooper-scoopers. Annie Benjamin of Lake Highlands and the Ya!Ya Band from Lakewood will perform.
There will also be food (for dogs and humans), games, a canine singing contest and doggie yoga instruction. Some of the animal rescue groups will offer on-site pet adoption.
Socially friendly dogs on leashes are invited to attend, Highgenboten says.
The festival is scheduled from 1-5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the stone tables at White Rock Lake, near Buckner and Lake Highlands Drive.
